Vinyl, banners, flyers, yard signs, telephone, answering machine, 40 page publication in edition of 20. Installed around the Kansas City region and at La Esquina as part of the Speak Easy residency.
Call and Response is an installation in three parts. The first is a series of signs, banners, flyers, and yard signs reading “To Respond, please call (816)888-4462“ placed at vacant and developing spaces around the city of Kansas City, evoking the functional emotionless aesthetic of nearby advertisements and “for rent” signs. The second is a telephone in the gallery receiving the calls and amplifying them on a speaker in realtime as city dwellers ‘respond’. A 15’ version of one such banner hangs on the exterior side of the gallery. The third component, available at the gallery and for posterity, is an artist publication that mixes documentation of the intervening banners alongside similar imagery in the everyday landscape of Kansas City with an essay written by the artist on advertisement’s effect on the use of public spaces.
