Peninsula Memories

Permanent listening stations, Audio Player, Informational Packet, Permanent Lobby Mural Peninsula Park Recreation Center

Peninsula Memories is a permanent installation and audio walking tour produced for Peninsula Park’s Centennial Celebration that highlights the individual narratives comprising the history of Peninsula Park, its Recreation Center, and the Piedmont neighborhood. The bulk of the content of the audio tour was culled from interviews with local area residents, park affiliates, and active members of the park’s programs. In addition, voice-over narratives will discuss the broader cultural impact of these specific historical events and editorialize the personal stories. The tour made an effort to refocus the history of the park’s relationship with the Black community of NE Portland, a history which was essentially eliminated from official records made available at the park prior to this residency and project. Field sounds mixed from local soundscapes accompany the tracks, creating an atmospheric effect on the listener as they walk through present-day Peninsula Park.
